Using MZ3 on a web site for free
« on: June 23, 2010, 03:48:14 pm »
I want to make some Flip Books available on some forums where I am a member.

For example, I would like to show the different steps to use to complete a wood carving from one of my designs. This is only as a hobby, and the ebooks will be made free to download, free to read on the web site, etc... and will be provided as a free service to the members of that web site and forum.

Here is one example of these sites.  http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/

----------------------

Now, I also have my own web site that I use for my own pleasure and to host my personal files that I make available for anybody interested in using them. (This one is easy, it is not a commercial use)

-----------------------

My question is this:

As the first forum is on a magazine web site, can I post MZ3 ebooks on their forum as free articles or is it considered as for a commercial use, as the forum is kind of a service for the magazine readers, but the forum is free to use for anybody who is a member of the forum. And the info is provided free to the members.

Another web site where I would like to post some ebooks is this one. http://www.khww.net/news.php

Contrary to the first web site, this one is free of any commercial use, and is owned by a single person who doesn't make any money from it.

I hope that I made clear the difference between the two web sites, and that you can help me clarify the situation.

Thanks for your software,

you're the best,

Gilles

Hi Gilles,I think youalready have the right "feeling" ;-)

I agree: case 2 (your personal site) and case 3 the "hooby-site" would be treated as "private use and you can publish MZ3 books without the need to go for a commercial license.

Case 1 is special, for different reasons:
1. it is not you running the site; So I doubt if it would be possible to upload a book (MegaZine3 software plus your mz3 and index file) to a space on that forum. And then make it accessible for others.
2. If that would be possible though, and it is only you publishing your personal books with just "hobby content" (no Ads or alike); then I would agree this to define "personal use" also.

But if the hoster (woodcarvingillustrated) would manage that and also provide content, then I would call this commercial.
You could check if you can manage to make a MZ3 book accessible; for a short time that is OK. You then should check with the administrator of that forum if he is OK with that (as I said: if at works at all).
And then we could talk again ;-)

Hope this helps a bit
Regards
Hans

Ok, I think I got it right now.

Thanks for the clarification. I wanted to make it right, for you and for me.

I'll tell you when/if I can post an Ebook on the #1 case. I think I can do it, but I'll have to check a few tings before.

ADDED: After taking some more time to evaluate the situation, I decided it would be a better move to keep everything on my own site. That's the only way to manage the files when I need to, and not be dependant on someone. I already used that option by adding a hard cover to the demo ebook, and updated the files on my site. The demo ebook is now also updated on the forum where I posted the link to my demo without having to change anything over there.

It will also keep things personal, even if I post the "links" to my Ebooks on these sites.

Perfect, sounds like a good solution and not just a compromise
