Deleted Accounts and Forum Upgrade [Spammer Wave] [Update 2]
« on: November 25, 2009, 09:07:42 pm »
Just a quick info: I have just deleted about 600 accounts from the forum, all of which
were spam accounts -- at least so I hope. If you registered somewhen during the last
few months, and didn't post at least once, I might have accidentally deleted your
account. So if you can't login because it tells you the account doesn't exist, please
register again, and accept my sincerest apologies!
I did try to quickly scan over the accounts before deleting them, but I'm human, and humans
tend to err once in a while ;)

I installed a different CAPTCHA system for the forum which should hopefully keep the
spambots at bay from now on...

Sorry for any inconveniences this might have caused.

Update: I also updated to a new version of the forum software. I think I didn't break anything
in the process, but if you notice anything weird going on just let me know :)

Update 2: OK, so reCAPTCHA fails, too. Added some fun questions, and because this is probably
not enough either, I decided to add the most commonly used mail providers to the ban list.
This includes:
  • fitness-force.com
  • all variants of hotmail (*@hotmail.*)
  • all variants of gmail (*@gmail.*)
  • all variants of yahoo (*@yahoo.*)
  • mail.ru

I'm sorry for the discrimination of users using those services, but I just don't have the
time to delete 30 spam accounts each and every day, tendency growing. Please use
another provider / mail address.

Regarding the ban list: this should only affect users trying to register (I specifically
unticked the "login" and "post" boxes), so users who already have an account should
still be able to continue using their account.

Again, sorry for the inconveniences. Spam sucks.

For the Snark was a Boojum, you see.

Before you ask a question
          After you get an answer
  • please document your problem with the answer in the Project Wiki. (e.g. in the FAQs)
  • help others out if you can, by answering their questions on the forum.
