xnview
Xnview is a powerful, cross-platform tool and available for free for private use, educational and non-profit organizaotions. The commercial license is affordable and costs about $40.
You might be interested in all the bells and whistles of xnview, but for our purposes the most important features are:
- Renaming
Different options are available: algorithmic as a combination of elements like original image name, camera name, different dates. Or name manipulations like substitution of defined characters. Also an automatic numbering in different formats is possible. - image manipulation
Of highest interest are features like: format conversion, quality adjustment, intelligent resilze features
With xnview it is easy to rename the image files to the proposed generic names like img_l1.jpg, img_l2.jpg, ... for low quality and img_h1.jpg, img_h2.jpg, ... for the high resolution version.
Also size adjustments to achieve a maximum width without changes of the aspect ratio are possible.
